The Digital Revolution of Devarattam
This app, a product of my "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, is dedicated to several esteemed individuals: Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimamani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti—recipients of the Kalaimani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards, respectively, for their contributions to Devarattam. My Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the beloved legends of Devarattam also receive this dedication.
The primary purpose of this Devarattam app is to promote and celebrate Devarattam and its awardees. The app provides detailed information about Devarattam and its prominent figures.
Devarattam is a vibrant folk dance of Tamil Nadu, traditionally performed—and continuing to be performed—by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community. While the dance boasts a repertoire of 32 to 72 steps, 32 steps form the fundamental core, with the remaining steps serving as variations.
Devarattam dancers gracefully perform, each holding a kerchief in each hand and adorned with salangai (ankle bells) on their legs. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
