Euchre uses a 24-card deck and features two teams of two players. A team scores by winning the majority of tricks. Three or four tricks earn one point; all five tricks earn two. Failing to win three tricks ("being euchred") results in a two-point penalty for that team.
A player with strong cards can "go alone," attempting to win all five tricks without a partner. Success yields four points; three or four tricks earn one point; and being euchred while playing alone still only costs the team two points.
The core rule: You're never forced to play trump (unless it's the led suit), but you must follow suit if possible.
