Hang
The Hang is a unique musical instrument classified as an idiophone, originating from Switzerland. Crafted with precision, the Hang features an intriguing design formed by two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet that are meticulously glued together at the rim. This construction results in a hollow interior and a distinctive 'UFO shape'. The top side, known as the "Ding," boasts a central 'note' hammered into it, surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields' also hammered into the surface. The bottom side, referred to as the "Gu," presents a plain surface with a rolled hole in the center. When the rim is struck, it produces a tuned note. This instrument is also known as a handpan.
The Hang operates on similar physical principles to the steelpan but has been ingeniously modified to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development stemmed from extensive research into the steelpan and other musical instruments, showcasing the innovative spirit behind its creation.
