Palace, a timeless card game also known as Shed, Karma, or "OG," was a staple in my high school's study hall and cafeteria during the 90s. Its widespread popularity extends to backpackers, making it a beloved game across various communities. The latest version, 3.1.6, released on August 7, 2024, includes essential SDK updates to enhance gameplay and functionality.

The new version of Palace introduces user-requested features such as the ability to pick up cards from the pile at any time and a rule where a 7 forces players to play a lower card. Additionally, you can now enjoy the game with friends, adding a competitive edge to your playtime. Challenge eight unique computer characters, each with distinct playing styles, or engage in live matches against your friends for a more personalized experience.

Basic Rules of Palace

At the start of the game, each player receives three 'face down cards,' which remain unseen and untouched until the game's end. Three 'face up cards' are then placed on top of these. Finally, players are dealt three cards to form their hand, with the option to swap cards between their hand and face up cards.

The game begins with the player holding the lowest card, typically a 3. On your turn, you must play a card (or multiple cards of the same value) that is equal to or higher than the card on top of the pick-up pile. After playing, draw from the deck to maintain at least three cards in your hand, unless the deck is depleted or you already have three or more cards.

Special rules apply to wild cards: 2's reset the pile, while 10's and four of a kind clear it entirely. If you can't play a card higher than or equal to the top card on the pile or a wild card, you must pick up the entire pile.

Once your hand is empty and the deck is exhausted, you move on to your face up cards. After playing all face up cards, you proceed to your face down cards. The first player to discard all their cards wins the game.

With its engaging gameplay and new features, Palace continues to be a favorite for both casual and competitive players alike.
