Phỏm, also known as Tá Lả or Tú Lơ Khơ, is a cherished traditional card game in Vietnam, particularly popular in the northern regions. "Tá Lả" is the southern name, while "Phỏm" is the northern term. In this game, players must strategically collect and discard cards to form sets called "phỏm," all while minimizing the total points of their unmatched, leftover cards. Key Terms in Phỏm/Tá Lả

- Phỏm: A set of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order, or three or four cards of the same rank.

- Junk Cards: Unmatched cards that do not form part of any Phỏm.

- Ù: When a player forms three Phỏm sets (having no junk cards), they win immediately.

- Stud/The Stomach: The remaining pile of cards after dealing, placed face-down in the center.

- Mom (Móm): When the game ends and a player has not created any Phỏm.

- Taking the Peg: On the final turn, playing a junk card that another player then picks up.

- Sending: On the last turn, if your junk card can be added to another player's exposed Phỏm, you may "send" it, and it will not be counted in your final score.

- Compensation: On the final turn, if a player "takes the peg" and a subsequent player goes Ù, the player who took the peg must pay compensation. The next player to take a peg must pay for the first peg-taker.

+ Additionally, if a player draws three consecutive cards of the same rank, it is also considered a compensation scenario.

- Re: After cards are played, if another player at the table can use them, the turn passes and you are allowed an extra play.

How to Play Phỏm - Tá Lả

- A game requires 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt 9 cards, except the dealer (or previous winner), who receives 10. The remaining cards form the Stud, placed face-down in the middle.

- Play proceeds clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.

- Gameplay:

+ The first player discards any card. The next player may take that card if it helps complete a Phỏm; if not, they draw one card from the Stud.

+ After taking or drawing a card, the player then discards one card. The next player may take that discard or draw from the Stud.

=> The round continues in this pattern.

- The game ends when a player goes Ù. If no one does, it ends after four rounds, and points from junk cards are tallied to determine the winner.

- Final Turn: A player must reveal all their Phỏm, send any sendable cards to other players' sets, and then play their final card. Remaining junk cards are counted for points.

Scoring Junk Cards (when no one goes Ù):

+ The player with the lowest total score wins.

+ Aces, Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 1, 11, 12, and 13 points respectively. Numbered cards are worth their face value.

+ Tie scores are broken by who revealed their cards first.

- Final Score Calculation:

+ First Place: +6 points

+ Second Place: -1 point

+ Third Place: -2 points

+ Fourth Place: -3 points

+ Player who is "pegged": -4 points

+ Player who "takes the peg": +4 points

+ Player who goes Ù (or "Khàn"): +15 points (each other player loses 5 points)

+ Player who is "Burned": Loses 4 points to the winner.
