James Gunn Confirms 'Absolutely Zero CG' in Superman’s Flying Face After TV Spot Raises Eyebrows
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online controversy surrounding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased previously unseen footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. This aerial shot, however, sparked discussion due to Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness amidst the wind-blown hair and cape.
Some attributed the effect to subpar CGI, but Gunn clarified on Threads that the facial features are entirely practical, stating, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location.
Gunn's explanation attributes the appearance to the close-up wide-angle lens used, emphasizing that Corenswet's expression, described as a knowing smirk, is authentic.
Despite the clarification, debate continues, with comparisons drawn to the flying Adam Warlock sequence in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. The buzz surrounding the Superman film, slated for release on July 11, 2025, as the inaugural film of the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" chapter, continues unabated.
