Cybercriminals are exploiting the desire for an unfair advantage in online games, deploying malware disguised as cheat scripts. This sophisticated attack leverages the Lua scripting language, popular in games like Roblox, to infect unsuspecting victims worldwide. Researchers have documented infections across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

The Deceitful Lure of Fake Cheat Scripts

Attackers utilize "SEO poisoning" to make their malicious websites appear legitimate in search results. These sites offer fraudulent cheat scripts, often presented as GitHub push requests for popular cheat engines like Solara and Electron, frequently associated with Roblox. Fake advertisements further entice users to download these malicious scripts.

Lua's Accessibility and the Risk

The simplicity of Lua, a lightweight scripting language accessible even to children, contributes to its vulnerability. Its use in various games, including World of Warcraft, Angry Birds, and Factorio, expands the potential attack surface. Once executed, the malicious script connects to a command-and-control (C2) server, enabling data exfiltration and the download of further malicious payloads. This poses significant risks, including data theft, keylogging, and complete system compromise.
