The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Jan 07,25

This concludes my retro game eShop series, as suitable console selections dwindle. Saving the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, building a legendary library still re-released today. These titles, once Nintendo's rivals, are now enjoyed across multiple platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order).

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving 2.5D platformer, stars a charming floppy-eared creature journeying through a dream world to thwart danger. Its vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, memorable bosses, and surprisingly impactful story shine. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly weaker, the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A landmark JRPG, Final Fantasy VII introduced the genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's biggest success and a key driver of the PlayStation's dominance. While a remake exists, the original's polygonal charm and enduring appeal remain undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, catapulting it to mainstream success. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original delivers a thrilling, action-packed experience reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its fun gameplay is a highlight, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged perfectly, their unique charm, vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and creative bosses make for a fantastic shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While overshadowed by Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross boasts a clever, visually stunning world and a large cast of characters (though some are underdeveloped). Its exceptional soundtrack is a standout feature.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

From the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its polished gameplay and balanced design. The Legacy Collection allows players to judge for themselves.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

A unique blend of platforming and adventure elements, Tomba! from the creator of Ghosts ‘n Goblins, offers deceptively challenging gameplay.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation version of Grandia (used for the HD release) shares the spirit of Lunar, offering a bright, cheerful adventure and a satisfying combat system.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

This collection features the first three Tomb Raider games, showcasing the franchise's iconic heroine. The original game's focus on tomb raiding stands out.

moon ($18.99)

A unique, anti-RPG experience, moon (originally Japan-only) offers an unconventional adventure with a thought-provoking message.
