2XKO Hopes to Revolutionize Tag-Team fighting Games

Riot Games' highly anticipated 2XKO (formerly Project L) is set to revolutionize the tag-team fighting game genre. This article delves into its innovative tag-team mechanics and the recently available playable demo.

Redefining Tag-Team Combat

2XKO: A New Era in Tag-Team Fighting

2XKO, showcased at EVO 2024, introduces a fresh approach to 2v2 fighting. Instead of one player controlling both characters, Duo Play lets two players team up, each controlling a champion. This creates thrilling four-player matches (two teams of two). Each team features a Point character and an Assist character. Even 2v1 matchups are possible!

2XKO: Innovative Tag-Team Mechanics

The tag system itself boasts three core mechanics:

  • Assist Actions: The Point character can summon the Assist for special moves.
  • Handshake Tag: The Point and Assist instantly switch roles.
  • Dynamic Save: The Assist can interrupt enemy combos.

Unlike many tag fighters where one knockout ends the match, 2XKO requires both team members to be defeated. However, defeated champions remain active as Assists, providing strategic support.

Beyond character selection, "Fuses" offer team synergy options to customize playstyles. The demo featured five Fuses:

  • PULSE: Rapid attacks for devastating combos.
  • FURY: Bonus damage and dash cancels below 40% health.
  • FREESTYLE: Perform two Handshake Tags in quick succession.
  • DOUBLE DOWN: Combine ultimate moves with your partner.
  • 2X ASSIST: Unleash multiple Assist actions.

Game designer Daniel Maniago highlighted the Fuse System's role in enhancing player expression and enabling powerful combos through synchronized teamwork.

Champion Roster and Alpha Playtest

2XKO: A Diverse Roster of Champions

The demo featured six playable champions (Braum, Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Yasuo, and Illaoi), each reflecting their League of Legends counterparts. While Jinx and Katarina were absent from the Alpha Lab Playtest, their inclusion is confirmed for the future.

2XKO: Setting a New Standard

2XKO joins the free-to-play fighting game arena, launching on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2025. The Alpha Lab Playtest (August 8-19) is currently accepting registrations. Check the linked article for details.
