Ace Attorney Investigations Remastered Collection: Reviews and Updates

Jan 26,25

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but let's not forget the good times. This week brings a bounty of reviews, new releases, and some enticing sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Switch continues to offer second chances at classic games. This collection brings Miles Edgeworth's two adventures, previously unavailable in English, to the forefront. Building upon previous titles' storylines, the sequel significantly enhances the original. Experiencing the prosecution's perspective offers a fresh take on the familiar gameplay: searching for clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases. While the pacing can feel less structured than other Ace Attorney titles, the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character make it engaging. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is far superior.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A dialogue history is a welcome addition. Overall, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling experience, especially with the official localization of the second game. Now, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is available on Switch!

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to the obscure NES classic Gimmick!? It's surprising, yet incredibly faithful to the original. Six lengthy levels of challenging physics-based platforming await, with an easier mode available for those seeking a less demanding experience. The protagonist's star attack remains central to gameplay, acting as weapon, vehicle, and puzzle solver. Collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players for tackling tougher sections.

Expect a tough challenge, similar to the original. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain engagement. Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor without losing its identity. Masterful platforming skills are essential. While an easier mode exists, don't underestimate the difficulty.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

A bold departure from the original Valfaris, this shoot 'em up delivers intense action, a rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals. Performance might be slightly hampered on the Switch, but the gameplay remains enjoyable. Weapon management is key, juggling your main gun, melee weapon, and a rotating third weapon to maintain offensive capabilities. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage and evasive maneuvers is crucial.

While different from the first Valfaris, it retains the same atmosphere. Despite potential performance issues on the Switch, it's a worthwhile experience for fans of the genre.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

A licensed game catering primarily to fans. The writing and meta-systems will resonate strongly with Umamusume enthusiasts. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games might leave non-fans wanting more. While the presentation is solid, the gameplay lacks depth and longevity for those unfamiliar with the franchise.

Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service overshadows the gameplay. The unlockables might offer some replayability, but overall, it falls short.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit games, offering a glimpse into a different side of the publisher. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games feature save states, rewind, display options, and a gallery. The full localization is a remarkable achievement.

The games themselves vary in quality. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a decent adventure game. The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but inconsistent. While not top-tier NES titles, they offer a unique perspective on Sunsoft's history. Fans of retro gaming and Sunsoft will appreciate this collection.
