The PS Portal, Sony’s handheld companion for the PS5, resembles a DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen at its center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The device retains the DualSense’s features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen that replaces the touchpad. You can play remotely outside your home, provided you have a highly stable, high-speed internet connection. Note that the PS Portal is not a standalone device—it requires a PS5 to function.

The PS Portal now supports gaming without a PS5. Sony’s recent update allows users to stream games directly from the PlayStation Now cloud service, bypassing the need for a $500 console. With this feature, Portal owners can connect to their PS5 or Sony’s cloud servers (with new beta quality-of-life updates rolled out in April). Opting for cloud streaming grants access to over 120 titles, such as Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. You’ll need a top-tier PlayStation Plus subscription, but $18 monthly is far more affordable than a $500 console plus $70 per game.

Streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi isn’t exclusive to the PS Portal. The PS Remote Play app on mobile devices, including handhelds like the Steam Deck, offers similar functionality. However, setup is more complex, and you may miss out on some DualSense features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"The PlayStation Portal exceeded my expectations, turning skepticism into delight. It’s a vast improvement over using a phone with a clip-on controller and performs better than I imagined. I love the freedom to play my PS5 anywhere with decent Wi-Fi, especially when the TV is occupied by family playing the Switch. It’s not a standalone device and fully relies on a PlayStation 5, but its limitations include no support for Wi-Fi logins requiring a browser and no Bluetooth audio. Despite these drawbacks, it’s the best PlayStation Remote Play solution available. For PS5 owners who love handheld gaming or share a household TV, it’s nearly a must-have."
