Initially announced with the promise of exploring two distinct regions—Lazio and Albion—the preview now reveals that Lazio serves as the starting point, setting the stage for the transition to the main setting in Albion.
Creative Director Manuel Rainer describes Lazio as a peaceful region that players begin in, but an unexpected disaster forces them to venture into the uncharted territories of Britain, known as Albion. This region is notorious for its harsh climate, rebellious tribes, and its considerable distance from Rome, all of which pose significant challenges to governance.
In Anno 117: Pax Romana, players take on the role of a governor, tasked with navigating these challenges without relying solely on violence. Instead, players are encouraged to build harmony by respecting and integrating local customs. A key feature highlighted is the ability to customize ships, allowing players to strategically choose between enhancing speed with additional oarsmen or bolstering firepower with onboard archery turrets.
