Armadillo Scutes: A Guide to Harvesting in Minecraft

Feb 18,25

The Armadillo, a passive mob introduced in Minecraft's 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, inhabits various warm biomes. Its tough scutes are crucial for crafting Wolf Armor. Here's how to acquire them:

Acquiring Armadillo Scutes:

Armadillos are found in groups (two to three) within these biomes: Badlands, Eroded Badlands, Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna, and Wooded Badlands. Their defensive mechanism is to curl into a ball when startled; approach cautiously.

There are two methods for obtaining scutes:

  • Passive Collection: Similar to collecting chicken eggs, an Armadillo sheds a single scute every 5-10 minutes. This requires patience but no tools.

  • Brushing: The more efficient method uses a crafted Brush. This tool gently removes one scute per use.

Using a Brush:

A Brush, crafted with a Feather, Copper Ingot, and Stick (center column of the crafting grid), can be used multiple times before breaking. In Java Edition, it's four uses; in Bedrock Edition, it's five. Damaged Brushes can be repaired using an anvil, preserving enchantments (Unbreaking, Mending, Curse of Vanishing) if present.

To use the brush, slowly approach the Armadillo to avoid its defensive roll, then use the appropriate interaction button.

Six scutes are needed for a full suit of Wolf Armor, crafted at a Crafting Table.

Currently, these are the only methods to obtain Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft.

Minecraft is available now.
