ASUS Teases Xbox-Branded Handheld

Gaming hardware giant ASUS has given us a sneak peek at what could be the much-rumored Xbox-branded handheld device. The ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) X/Twitter account tantalized fans with a teaser video featuring their "little robot friend cooking something up," which briefly showcased a ROG Xbox controller and a handheld system.

This teaser follows last month's IGN report on Microsoft's ambitious plans for video game hardware, including a full next-gen Xbox slated for 2027 and an Xbox-branded gaming handheld possibly launching later in 2025. The handheld device in ASUS's teaser distinctly features Xbox-style buttons (Y, B, A, and X) rather than those of PlayStation or Nintendo. It also includes a D-pad, two thumbsticks, and four additional smaller buttons, though these are somewhat obscured in the teaser.

Adding fuel to the speculation, the official Xbox account playfully acknowledged the teaser with a wide-eyed gif, hinting at an impending reveal.

While we await more details, including a reveal date or launch window, the monitor in the teaser displays phrases like "Marathon stamina, more capacity, faster speeds" and "fresh look!" These hints suggest the potential unique selling points of the handheld.

In January, Jason Ronald, Microsoft's VP of 'Next Generation,' shared with The Verge that the company aims to merge Xbox and Windows experiences for PC gaming handhelds produced by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as ASUS, Lenovo, and Razer.

Though this Xbox-branded handheld isn't a Microsoft-made console, rumors persist that Microsoft plans to launch its own in 2027, possibly alongside its next-gen Xbox. Microsoft's gaming head, Phil Spencer, recently hinted that a first-party Xbox handheld is still several years off.

Meanwhile, the successor to the Xbox Series X is reportedly in full production and expected in two years, aligning with Xbox president Sarah Bond's remarks about Microsoft's commitment to "moving full speed ahead on our next generation hardware," aiming for the most significant technological leap in a generation.

Amidst this, speculation abounds about the future of consoles. Netflix's President of Games, Alain Tascan, recently suggested that future gaming might rely less on traditional consoles, even as major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo continue to advance with new hardware. Nintendo's highly anticipated Switch 2 is set to be revealed in a Nintendo Direct on April 2, where fans eagerly anticipate learning about its new features, release date, and pre-order details.
