Carrie Patel, the former director of the highly anticipated RPG Avowed, has recently left Obsidian Entertainment, a legendary company known for its rich storytelling and immersive game worlds. Patel's departure comes just months after the successful launch of Avowed, marking the end of her 11-year tenure at Obsidian, where she worked on iconic titles like The Outer Worlds and the Pillars of Eternity series.

In a recent update to her LinkedIn profile, Patel announced her new role as Game Director at Night School, a studio owned by Netflix and renowned for the Oxenfree series of narrative adventures. "I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as Game Director at Night School: A Netflix Game Studio!" Patel shared in her update. While details about her current project remain under wraps, her move to Night School signifies a new chapter in her career, focusing on narrative-driven games.

Night School gained fame with the Oxenfree series, with the latest installment, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, released in 2023. The studio also ventured into the Black Mirror universe with Thronglets, despite facing layoffs earlier this year. Netflix's gaming division has seen other changes as well, including the closure of a studio working on a AAA project led by Halo veteran Joseph Staten.

During her time at Obsidian, Patel was instrumental in steering Avowed from its initial concept—a darker fantasy setting reminiscent of The Elder Scrolls with a single open world and multiplayer co-op—towards a more distinctive and brighter experience. The final version of Avowed features multiple large individual maps and is strictly a single-player adventure.

The response to Avowed has been largely positive, with IGN's review praising the game's worldbuilding and character writing while noting that it plays it safe within the fantasy genre. Although Patel had discussed plans for expanding the Avowed franchise with potential expansions or a sequel, she will not be involved in these future developments.

Last week, Obsidian announced a development roadmap for Avowed, promising minor but exciting updates over the next six months, including a Photo Mode and New Game Plus feature.

Obsidian's next major project, The Outer Worlds 2, is set to be showcased in detail at the Xbox Games Showcase in June, continuing the studio's tradition of crafting engaging RPG experiences.
