Balatro reclassified as PEGI 12 by ratings board after appeal by publisher

Balatro, the roguelike deckbuilder, has received a significant reclassification from PEGI 18 to PEGI 12. This follows a decision by the ratings board, placing the game on a more appropriate level compared to its initial, surprisingly mature rating. The previous PEGI 18 rating had incorrectly categorized Balatro alongside games like Grand Theft Auto in terms of content, a comparison that baffled both the developer and many players.

Localthunk, the developer, announced the reclassification on Twitter, crediting an appeal by Balatro's publisher to the PEGI board. This isn't Balatro's first encounter with regulatory issues; it was briefly removed from the Nintendo eShop due to concerns about its gambling content, despite the game not offering real-money betting or winnings. In-game currency is used solely for purchasing additional cards within each run.

ytThe initial PEGI 18 rating stemmed from the game's depiction of gambling-related imagery, a seemingly disproportionate concern given the game's mechanics. This misclassification unfortunately extended to mobile platforms, despite the prevalence of in-app purchases in many mobile games.

While the corrected rating is welcome, the initial misjudgment highlights a potential issue with consistent rating practices. If you're now considering giving Balatro a try, check out our tier list of Jokers to help you strategize your gameplay.
