Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

Jan 26,25

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before this crucial decision, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin. This requires thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. The choice carries immense weight; some companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (potentially requiring a 30 roll) are needed to influence companion decisions.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Should You Free Orpheus?

The decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

After the Netherbrain battle (which the Emperor teleports the party to after a failed attempt), the choice is presented: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's demise as the Emperor absorbs his knowledge. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. This grants a tactical advantage against the Netherbrain but might alienate players attached to these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. The risk of party members becoming Mind Flayers remains. However, Orpheus joins the fight against the Netherbrain alongside the Githyanki. He'll even willingly sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; choose Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. Siding with the Emperor might lead to Lae'zel's betrayal and Karlach's return to Avernus. The choice is entirely dependent on player preference.

Moral Considerations:

The "moral" choice depends on individual perspectives, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, as a Githyanki descendant, is the rightful ruler and opposes Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful to others. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if their actions influence the wider world.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to stop the Netherbrain and assist the party. He accepts that sacrifice is sometimes necessary. Following his plan might lead to becoming a Mind Flayer, but it's a morally upright path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; careful choices can lead to an outcome beneficial to all.
