BG3 Modding Boom: 1+ Million Mods Post-Patch 7
Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
The release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 has ignited a modding frenzy. Within 24 hours of its September 5th launch, over one million mods were installed, according to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke. This figure has since exploded, with mod.io founder Scott Reismanis reporting over three million installs and counting. Vincke himself described the modding community's response as "pretty big."
This surge in modding activity is fueled by Patch 7's significant additions: new evil endings, enhanced split-screen, and the highly anticipated Larian-developed Mod Manager. This integrated tool streamlines the process of browsing, installing, and managing mods directly within the game.
Previously, modding relied on a separate Steam application providing access to Larian's Osiris scripting language. This allowed modders to craft custom narratives, utilize custom scripts, and perform basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.
Expanding Modding Horizons: Cross-Platform Compatibility
Further enhancing the modding scene, a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus) unlocks a full level editor and reactivates previously restricted editor features. While Larian initially limited tool access, focusing on game development rather than tool creation, the community's ingenuity is clearly pushing boundaries.
Larian Studios is actively pursuing cross-platform modding, a complex undertaking requiring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed their commitment, stating that PC support will come first, followed by console support after addressing any potential issues. This phased approach allows for thorough testing and smoother integration across platforms.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined experience with UI improvements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance enhancements. With more updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
