Borderlands 4 Release Moved Up 11 Days: Impact on GTA 6 Launch?
Gearbox's highly anticipated first-person shooter, Borderlands 4, is set to release 11 days earlier than initially planned, as announced by development head Randy Pitchford in a premature video leak. Originally scheduled for September 23, the game will now launch on September 12, available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
In the video, Pitchford expressed his excitement, stating, "Everything is going great, actually. In fact, everything is going kind of the best-case scenario. The game is awesome, the team is cooking, and so the launch date for Borderlands 4 is changing. We’re moving it forward. The launch date is now September 12."
He also hinted at an imminent PlayStation State of Play event focusing on Borderlands 4.
The unexpected move raises eyebrows, especially given the impending release of Grand Theft Auto VI, currently slated for late 2025. Industry watchers speculate whether Borderlands 4's earlier release aims to create more breathing room ahead of the GTA juggernaut. Published by 2K Games, which is under Take-Two Interactive, both titles share a common corporate umbrella, suggesting strategic coordination at the highest levels.
If Borderlands 4 indeed launches on September 12, it potentially pushes back the GTA VI release window to October, November, or even December 2025. However, this密集 release schedule risks cannibalizing sales between major franchises. Other 2K titles, such as Mafia: The Old Country, are also in the pipeline for 2025, adding further complexity to the publisher's strategy.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed these concerns, emphasizing the company's commitment to avoiding overlap-induced cannibalization. He assured that releases are timed to maximize consumer engagement with each title. Despite this, there remains speculation that GTA VI could face delays into early 2026.
When questioned about GTA VI's timeline, Zelnick acknowledged inherent risks but remained optimistic, stating, "We feel really good about it."
