Breakout Beyond Puts a New Angle on Atari's Classic Brick-Breaker

Mar 26,25

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a modern update with Breakout Beyond, a fresh take on Atari's classic brick-breaker. This new version retains the traditional paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique twist: the game progresses sideways, moving players from left to right as they break bricks.

Developed by Choice Provisions, the creative minds behind the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond promises an engaging experience. As players build up combos, the game's lights and effects become more intense, enhancing the excitement. Special bricks trigger spectacular effects, including massive explosions and even a laser cannon, adding a thrilling dimension to the gameplay.

With 72 meticulously designed levels, Breakout Beyond offers a substantial challenge. For those seeking endless fun, an unlockable endless mode with a global online leaderboard is included. Additionally, the game supports local two-player co-op, allowing friends to join in on the brick-breaking action.

Originally intended as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development was taken over by Atari. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Although Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision last year, the Amico console itself remains unreleased.

Breakout Beyond is slated for release later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, ensuring a wide audience can enjoy this innovative take on a classic game.
