Crafting an Anvil

Anvils are essential for item repair. Crafting requires 4 iron ingots and 3 iron blocks (a total of 31 iron ingots!), a significant investment but worthwhile. Remember to smelt the ore first using a furnace or blast furnace. The crafting recipe is shown below:

Anvil Functionality
The anvil's crafting menu has three slots; only two can be used at once. Place two identical, damaged items to create a single, fully repaired item. Alternatively, combine a damaged item with the materials used in its creation.

Repairing consumes experience points; higher durability restoration requires more experience. Note that some items, including enchanted items, may have specific repair requirements.
Repairing Enchanted Items
Repairing enchanted items is similar to repairing regular items, but requires more experience and often involves using other enchanted items or enchanted books.
Combining two enchanted items merges their enchantments and durability, potentially resulting in a higher-level item. The outcome and experience cost depend on the item order—experimentation is key!

You can also use enchanted books in place of a second enchanted item. Using two books can further upgrade enchantments.
Anvil Durability and Limitations
Even anvils have limited durability, indicated by cracks appearing on the block. Frequent use will eventually break the anvil, necessitating crafting a replacement. Remember that anvils cannot repair all items; scrolls, books, bows, and chainmail require alternative methods.
Repairing Items Without an Anvil
Minecraft's versatility extends to item repair. A crafting table offers a simpler alternative, allowing you to combine identical items to restore durability. This is a convenient method, especially during travel.

Experiment with different repair methods and resources to discover the most efficient approach for your needs. Remember that beyond these methods, more advanced repair techniques exist as you progress in the game.
