Cage Slams AI Acting: "Dead End," Lacks Human Condition
Nicolas Cage, in a passionate Saturn Awards acceptance speech, decried the use of artificial intelligence in acting. He warned that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading toward "a dead end," arguing that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition.
Cage, accepting the Best Actor award for his role in Dream Scenario, expressed his gratitude to director Kristoffer Borgli, but then shifted his focus to the burgeoning AI landscape. He voiced strong opposition to AI's role in artistic creation, stating, "I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us. Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us." He emphasized that even minor AI manipulation would ultimately compromise the integrity and authenticity of artistic expression, replacing it with mere financial gain.
He asserted that the purpose of art, including film performance, is to mirror the complexities of the human experience through a thoughtful and emotional process of recreation—a process, he insisted, that AI cannot replicate. Allowing AI to take over, he warned, would result in art devoid of heart, lacking edge, and ultimately turning to "mush." He concluded his impassioned plea with a call to protect against AI interference, urging actors to prioritize authentic and honest self-expression.

Cage's concerns are echoed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting field, where AI-generated performances have become more prevalent. Ned Luke, known for his work in Grand Theft Auto 5, and Doug Cockle, the voice of Geralt in The Witcher, have both voiced concerns about AI's impact on their profession, highlighting the potential loss of income and the ethical implications.
Filmmakers have also weighed in, with opinions varying. While Tim Burton labeled AI-generated art "very disturbing," Zack Snyder advocated for embracing the technology instead of resisting it.
