Lost Planet 2 Drops Games for Windows Live, Ending Online Co-op

Apr 08,26

Capcom has discreetly updated Lost Planet 2 by removing the Games for Windows Live (GFWL) integration, which effectively disables online features and wipes previous save files.

The change has surprised fans on the subreddit, especially considering Lost Planet 2 is a multiplayer-focused title. As noted in our 2010 review: "At its heart, it offers the foundation of a compelling action game with impressive visuals, but poor explanations, awkward structure, and frustrating checkpoint systems undermine the experience—not to mention it's nearly impossible to enjoy as a single-player game. A few standout co-op moments shine when everything clicks, but they aren't enough to overcome the flaws."

Losing saved progress is inconvenient, but the loss of multiplayer is more significant—especially given the game’s design. Without GFWL, Lost Planet 2 is missing a core component of its gameplay.

"The whole appeal of the series is co-op," remarked one player. "At this point, it might as well be delisted from Steam." Another questioned: "...they removed online functionality from a game built around online co-op?"

Games for Windows Live was Microsoft's digital gaming service. It offered features such as Xbox achievements, online multiplayer, and cross-platform support, but is now discontinued. As a result, players of GFWL-dependent titles face either extended login delays or wait for developer updates—something fans hope will happen here, though unlikely given the game's 15-year age.

On a positive note, new players won't be affected—Lost Planet 2 has been delisted. Capcom posted a notice on its Steam page stating: "We are aware of an installation issue related to Games for Windows LIVE and have temporarily disabled purchases on Steam while we look into it. We’ll share updates as the investigation continues. Thank you for your patience."

Other Capcom titles, including Street Fighter x Tekken and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, are also impacted, with similar messages on their store pages. Still, some fans believe this may be temporary; when Capcom phased out GFWL from Resident Evil, the studio reportedly replaced it with Steamworks multiplayer.

We've reached out to Capcom for a statement and will update if we receive a response.

Back in 2010, we considered Lost Planet 2 to be an average release.
