Capcom Updates ‘Resident Evil 4′, ‘Resident Evil Village’, and ‘Resident Evil 7’ on iOS With Online DRM

TouchArcade Rating: While updates for premium mobile ports are usually welcome for optimization or compatibility, Capcom's recent update (released an hour ago) for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an unwelcome online DRM. This DRM checks purchase history upon game launch, verifying ownership of the game and any DLC before proceeding to the title screen. Rejecting the check closes the application. This means constant online connectivity is now mandatory, adding a delay even when resuming a saved game. Prior to this update, all three titles functioned offline.

Pre-update testing confirmed offline playability. Post-update, the DRM prompt appears, and selecting "no" immediately exits the game. While this may not bother all users, the forced online check on every launch is a significant drawback for a paid title. Hopefully, Capcom will implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking less frequently. This update unfortunately diminishes the appeal of Capcom's premium iOS ports.
