Channing Tatum's Gambit Film: A '30s Screwball Romance in Superhero Setting
Channing Tatum's long-awaited portrayal of the X-Men's Gambit was set to take a unique twist, aiming for a '30s screwball romantic comedy vibe within the superhero genre. This intriguing approach was confirmed by Lizzy Caplan, who was slated to star alongside Tatum in the now-canceled project. Speaking to Business Insider, the Cloverfield actress described the concept as "a really cool idea," highlighting the innovative direction the film intended to take.
Tatum's journey to bring Gambit to the screen has been fraught with challenges. Despite his dedication, the project was shelved following the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum "traumatized" and fearing he might never get to play the charismatic mutant. However, fans were thrilled to see Tatum make a surprise cameo as Gambit in the MCU blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine.

Caplan, who was set to play the female lead as early as 2017, shared that she had signed on for the film and had discussions with Tatum about the project. "We got down the road, we were gonna shoot it," she revealed, indicating that the film had a start date before being canceled.
In 2018, Simon Kinberg, the producer of the Gambit movie, elaborated on the film's intended tone to IGN, stating it would embrace a "romantic or sex comedy vibe" reflective of Gambit's character as a hustler and womanizer. This perspective was echoed by Caplan years later, who noted, "They wanted to do, like, a '30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which would have been really fun."
As for what lies ahead for Tatum and Gambit, Marvel Studios has remained tight-lipped. However, the studio has confirmed the eventual integration of the X-Men into the MCU. Last August, Ryan Reynolds, star of Deadpool, shared a high-quality version of a scene from Deadpool & Wolverine on Twitter, sparking further speculation among Gambit enthusiasts about the character's future in the MCU.
Warning! Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers follow.
