Cineverse, having secured U.S. distribution rights for the third Silent Hill film set for release later this year, describes Return to Silent Hill as a "faithful adaptation" of the iconic Silent Hill 2 storyline.

“Silent Hill stands as a premier video game franchise, and Christophe Gans has masterfully recreated its haunting atmosphere in Return to Silent Hill,” said Brandon Hill, Cineverse’s executive director of acquisitions, in an interview with Variety.

Director Christophe Gans expressed enthusiasm, stating: “I’m thrilled to collaborate with Cineverse, a company that truly understands the passion of the fanbase. Return to Silent Hill is crafted with deep reverence for Konami’s legendary Silent Hill 2, a true gaming masterpiece. I hope this film delivers a fulfilling experience for fans.”

The storyline will resonate with fans of the original Silent Hill 2 or the 2024 Bloober remake. It centers on James (Jeremy Irvine), a man devastated by the loss of his true love (Hannah Emily Anderson). A mysterious letter draws him back to Silent Hill, where he encounters a town altered by a sinister force and faces both familiar and new terrifying entities. Announced in October 2022, the film revealed its take on Red Pyramid Thing—known as Pyramid Head—in May 2024.

Gans’ initial Silent Hill movie, loosely based on the first game, follows Rose, a mother searching for her missing daughter, Sharon, in a town where summer brings snow. Despite a screenplay by Oscar-winning writer Roger Avary, known for Pulp Fiction, our review gave it a middling 5/10, noting: “The video game-to-film genre continues its streak of mediocrity. Silent Hill is visually striking and intelligent but lacks engagement. It’s a slog to watch, missing the entertainment core of video games.”

The second film, Silent Hill: Revelation, directed by Michael J. Bassett instead of Gans, drew loosely from Silent Hill 3. It earned a disappointing 4.5 in our review: “Silent Hill: Revelation 3D falls short in every aspect, failing to captivate or terrify, potentially burying the franchise.”

Return to Silent Hill is planned for a wide theatrical release in the U.S. later this year, with Cineverse emphasizing its commitment to a broad debut.
