Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3

Civilization 7 VR Will Be a Meta Quest 3 Exclusive, Hopefully with Better UI Than On Steam

Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is set to revolutionize gaming with its exclusive VR launch on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks the franchise’s first foray into virtual and mixed reality, courtesy of 2K Games and Firaxis Games.

Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm on 2K's official blog, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!

Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, also shared his optimism about the partnership, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.

While Civ 7 is slated for release on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be available on PSVR2.

Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer

Civ 7 VR offers players an immersive experience at a Command Table, allowing them to strategize and interact with the game world in a way that feels like a living tabletop game. Players can switch between virtual reality, where they explore an ornate museum setting, and mixed reality, where the Command Table integrates seamlessly into their real-world environment.

The game supports single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly with friends, seeing each other as world leaders across the virtual table. An online multiplayer session requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.

Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback

Firaxis Games has taken player feedback seriously following the early access period of Civ 7, which started on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition buyers. The game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with many players highlighting issues with the User Interface, which hinders access to critical gameplay information.

In response, Firaxis Games has committed to enhancing the UI, aiming to make interactions more intuitive, improve map readability, and address formatting and polish concerns. They also plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer modes, a broader range of map types, and other enhancements. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance and improvements, diplomacy and crises adjustments, and bug fixes.

Civilization 7 VR is slated for a Spring 2025 release on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a precise date has yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see a full release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
