"Conan O'Brien Exposes Bizarre Academy Rules for Oscars Statues in Promos"

May 26,25

In an unusual twist of events, former Oscars host Conan O’Brien shared a surprising tale on his podcast, "Conan Needs a Friend," revealing that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences firmly rejected his promotional ad ideas for the ceremony. O’Brien had envisioned a series of ads portraying a domestic partnership between himself and a 9-foot tall Oscar statue. However, the Academy was not on board with his creative vision, particularly regarding the statue's presentation.

O’Brien humorously recounted one concept where he and the Oscar statue would engage in typical couple disputes. "We’re fighting about things couples fight about," he explained. He had envisioned a scene where the Oscar statue would be lying on a couch while he vacuumed, asking it to lift its feet or help with chores. Yet, the Academy was quick to veto this idea. "We wanted to do it and they just said, ‘No, no no, that can’t happen,’" O’Brien shared, highlighting the Academy's strict stance.

The Academy's rules for the Oscar statue are indeed peculiar. O’Brien was shocked to learn that "Oscar can never be horizontal." He likened the statue to a sacred relic, saying, "Like, wow, this is like the thigh bone of St. Peter. This is a religious icon." Additionally, the Academy insisted that the statue must always be "naked," dashing O’Brien’s idea of dressing the statue as an apron-clad housewife serving him leftovers.

While these decisions might seem baffling, the Academy has the authority to enforce them. It's unfortunate that viewers missed out on O’Brien’s unique comedic take on the promos. Fans are hopeful that he’ll return with another witty concept in the future, with many already rooting for him to host the Oscars again in 2026.
