Cyberpunk 2077 to Use 25% of Switch 2's Storage

Apr 22,25

CD Projekt Red has officially announced that the install size for Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will be 64GB. This is considerably smaller than the versions available for Xbox or PS5, which range from 100 to 110GB. However, on the Switch 2, with its confirmed internal storage of 256GB, this game will occupy a substantial 25% of the available space.

Set to launch simultaneously with the Switch 2 on June 5, Cyberpunk 2077 will be available in two formats: a physical 64GB game card or a digital download via the Nintendo eShop. It's noteworthy that while some new Switch 2 game cards will merely contain a download key rather than the actual game, this will not be the case for Cyberpunk 2077.

This brings us to an important consideration: the rapid filling of the Switch 2's internal storage. The Switch 2's 256GB internal storage is a significant improvement over the original Switch's 32GB. However, the trend of increasing game sizes, evident with titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and the upcoming Mario Kart World ($80), suggests that storage space could become a concern.

The solution lies in expandable storage, a feature well-established in the gaming console market. While the original Switch supported standard microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, the Switch 2 will exclusively use microSD Express cards. This means that existing microSD cards will be incompatible, and gamers will need to invest in the newer, more expensive microSD Express cards.

To help gamers navigate this transition, IGN's deals team has identified the best deals on Switch 2-compatible microSD Express cards. Options include 128GB ($44.99), 256GB ($59.99), 512GB ($99.99), and 1TB ($199.99) cards from reputable brands like SanDisk and Lexar. Some of these cards are already in high demand, with certain models marked as "temporarily out of stock" on Amazon.

Nintendo is collaborating with SanDisk and Samsung to offer branded microSD Express cards, which are expected to be pricier than third-party equivalents. The increased demand driven by the Switch 2 may encourage more manufacturers to enter the microSD Express market, though it's uncertain whether this will lead to more competitive pricing.
