Deadpool's Final Marvel Massacre: Trilogy Concludes

Mar 14,25

2011's Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe lived up to its name, showcasing Wade Wilson's descent into madness and his subsequent massacre of Marvel heroes and villains. The popularity of this series led to a sequel, 2017's Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again, by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajić. Now, the duo returns for a final bloody chapter: Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time. This time, the stakes are even higher: Wade's wrath extends across the entire Marvel multiverse.

IGN recently spoke with Bunn about this concluding act. Below is an exclusive preview of the first issue, followed by insights into the fourth-wall-breaking mayhem to come.

Bunn, a prolific Deadpool creator (Deadpool: Killustrated, Night of the Living Deadpool, Deadpool & the Mercs for Money), revealed he didn't initially plan a trilogy. "I never knew that series would go anywhere," he stated. "My first pitch after completing the first Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe was actually Deadpool Kills the Marvel Multiverse. Now is a much better time to tell that story!"

Escalating the conflict presented a challenge. Bunn's solution? The multiverse. This installment features battles against Cap-Wolves, Worldbreaker Hulks, and twisted versions of familiar heroes and villains.

"The multiverse opens up new avenues," Bunn explains. "We wanted this to be different. I spent a lot of time researching the 'best' variants of Marvel heroes and villains. What I didn’t realize is we were creating the most epic Deadpool story of all time!"

While Bunn remains tight-lipped about specific matchups (beyond the previously revealed Cap-Wolf and Worldbreaker Hulk), he promises exciting encounters with dozens of characters, some obscure and unseen in over 30 years. "There are some cool, cool characters showing up," he hints. "And Deadpool is battling some of the most powerful heroes and villains in the multiverse."

Talajić's artistic style will continue to evolve, building upon the visual flourishes of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again, which contrasted bloody carnage with the sanitized visions within Deadpool's mind. "With this new book, we're not changing the overall visual style for each kill," Bunn says. "Dalibor is bringing some real insanity to the page!"

Unlike direct sequels, the previous two books offered distinct scenarios for Deadpool's murderous spree. This third installment, however, offers a fresh start. "It's a fresh start... sort of," Bunn teases. "The story stands alone. But observant readers might pick up on a few interesting tidbits connecting to what came before."

While previous entries portrayed a sympathetic Deadpool, this iteration takes it further. "I think the Deadpool we see in this book is much more sympathetic," Bunn states. "We thought, 'What if Deadpool killed the Marvel Universe... and we were rooting for him to succeed?' His headspace... I can't wait for readers to get that joke."
