Get ready, Guardians — Bungie has just revealed the exciting new developments coming to its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2. Dubbed the "Year of Prophecy," this year promises four major content releases, including two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates for both paying and free players.

The "Year of Prophecy" will feature two paid expansions and two major updates, ensuring a dynamic year filled with fresh content. Kicking things off is "Rite of the Nine," a free update that reimagines dungeon diving for both veterans and newcomers. Available now, this update brings unique twists to familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep. Players can look forward to reconnecting with Orin and exploring refreshed dungeon weapons.

On July 15, Destiny 2 will see the launch of the new paid expansion, "Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate." This expansion marks the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine, beings that predate the Traveler. It introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and unfolds on the new destination, Kepler. Inspired by Destiny 2’s dungeon challenges and designed to encourage exploration, Kepler will feature new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced, including revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This will allow players to easily choose between various activities such as Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, tailored for solo players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will offer deeper gameplay customization, and curated activity rotations will keep the game fresh.

Following "The Edge of Fate," the "Ash & Iron" update will launch on September 9, leading into the second expansion, "Destiny 2: Renegades," on December 2. "Renegades" draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's distinctive storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements. The year will conclude with the "Shadow & Order" major update on March 3.

These announcements come as welcome news to Destiny 2 players, especially after Bungie's layoffs in July 2024, which affected 220 staff members, following another 100 layoffs less than a year earlier.

While Destiny 2 continues to evolve, Bungie is also working on the reboot of its classic franchise, Marathon. Revealed in May 2023, the first real look at Marathon came recently, and IGN's hands-on preview expressed confidence in its potential to satisfy the Bungie PvP itch when it launches on PC and consoles in September.
