Funcom’s Servers Are Prepared

As the release date for Dune: Awakening approaches, developer Funcom is reassuring fans of their readiness for a potentially crowded launch in June. In a Steam post dated May 7, Funcom addressed the most pressing questions post the first closed beta, particularly about server capacity and large-scale multiplayer mechanics.

Upon starting the game, players will select a server as their home base. Each server is part of a World, which comprises at least 20 servers, allowing players to interact across different servers within the same World.

However, concerns have been raised about Funcom’s ability to handle server loads and manage queues. The studio anticipates a heavy load at launch, with some servers reaching capacity. To address this, they assure that "thousands of servers grouped together in hundreds of Worlds will be available at launch."

Funcom emphasized, "While a Hagga Basin server can support 40 concurrent players, the natural ebb and flow of player activity means it can accommodate several hundred choosing that server as their home." The studio has rigorously tested these mechanics during the closed beta and implemented systems to limit character creation on overly popular servers, reducing the likelihood of servers becoming full.

Dune: Awakening emphasizes large-scale multiplayer dynamics but remains enjoyable solo. Players can explore Arrakis on their own within the multiplayer environment. Single-player and private server options will not be available at launch but are slated for inclusion in post-launch updates.
