Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online has finally introduced a much-anticipated feature that fans have been requesting for over a decade: subclasses. This addition brings a new level of customization and flexibility to the game. Dive into the details of how subclasses work and what the future holds for ESO.

As The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) celebrates its 10th Anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled exciting updates during ESO Direct 2025 on April 10. The long-awaited subclass feature is set to enhance player experience significantly.

For years, the ESO community has voiced their desire for the ability to swap classes without starting anew. The introduction of new skill trees often meant rerolling characters to access fresh content, a tedious process in an MMO. Now, with the addition of subclasses, players can mix and match skill lines without the need to create new characters.

To unlock subclasses, players must reach level 50. Once achieved, they can retain one skill line from their original class and swap out two others with any of the six available classes. This system opens up over 3000 unique combinations, enabling players to tailor their gameplay to their preferred style.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new feature, stating that extensive testing has been conducted. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, the developers are content with the balance achieved.

Seasons of the Worm Cult

Zenimax Online is shifting towards seasonal content, a move that Studio Director Matt Firor believes will allow for more experimental releases and better responsiveness to player feedback.

Firor stated, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."

The upcoming chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, marks a significant sequel to the game's original Molag Bal storyline, set ten years in the making. Players will explore the new Isle of Solstice zone, delving into the resurgence of the Worm Cult.

Producer Susan Kath noted that while Seasons of the Worm Cult will span most of the year, future seasons will typically last between three to six months. Zenimax plans to introduce "remix" seasons, revisiting past storylines, with a teased Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
