"Ex-Rockstar Dev Urges GTA 4 Remaster: 'Niko Best GTA Protagonist'"

May 23,25

A former Rockstar veteran has weighed in on the swirling rumors about a potential re-release of *Grand Theft Auto IV* (GTA 4) on the latest generation of consoles, stating that the game should indeed be remastered. The buzz around a GTA 4 re-release originated from a post by Tez2, a well-known figure in the GTA community for leaking Rockstar information. Tez2 hinted at a possible GTA 4 port for modern systems this year, suggesting that this was linked to Rockstar's recent decision to shut down a GTA 5 Liberty City mod.

However, it's crucial to emphasize that Rockstar has not given any official indication of plans to re-release GTA 4. Given the studio's intense focus on developing *Grand Theft Auto VI* (GTA 6), a GTA 4 re-release would be unexpected.

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar Games technical director who was with the company from 1995 to 2009 and worked on GTA 4, responded to the rumors on social media. Although he hadn't heard about them, he expressed that GTA 4 "should be remastered." Vermeij praised the game, calling it great and pointing out the success of recent remasters, possibly alluding to titles like *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered*. He further stated his desire to see the game updated and praised Niko Bellic as the best protagonist in any GTA game.

Vermeij suggested that a potential remaster might involve porting GTA 4 to the latest version of the Rage engine, which Rockstar uses for its game development. However, it's important to reiterate that Rockstar has provided no official indication of plans to remaster GTA 4. Considering the massive scope of GTA 6's development, tackling a GTA 4 remaster simultaneously could stretch Rockstar's resources too thin.

Rockstar could potentially delegate the port to an external studio, as it did with *Red Dead Redemption*. Yet, the timing of a GTA 4 re-release in 2025 doesn't align well with GTA 6's anticipated fall 2025 release window. If GTA 6 launches on schedule, Rockstar would likely avoid releasing a GTA 4 remaster concurrently, as it might divert attention from their flagship title.

Shifting focus back to Liberty City, some GTA fans speculate that this iconic setting, which mirrors New York City and was featured in GTA 4 and *GTA: Chinatown Wars*, might appear in GTA 6, either at launch or as post-launch DLC. GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, which encompasses Vice City, inspired by Miami.

As we await further developments, there's a wealth of information available on GTA 6, including detailed breakdowns, 70 new screenshots, and insights into how the game might perform on the PS5 Pro.
