GameCube Fans Buzz Over New Nintendo Filings for Switch 2

Mar 28,25

Nintendo fans are buzzing with excitement over new filings hinting at a potential GameCube controller designed for use with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. According to reports from Nintendo Life, a recent FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2, and speculation suggests it could be a wireless Bluetooth controller.

Online sleuths at Famiboards have analyzed the filing's images and believe the label location matches that of the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick. This has led to speculation that the controller might be intended for use with Nintendo's Switch Online subscription service, which already supports classic wireless controllers for retro gaming.

While it's possible this could be a Switch 2 Pro Controller, the current buzz is centered around its potential integration with Nintendo Switch Online, possibly bringing a library of GameCube classics to the service. Fans have long requested GameCube games on Switch, but Nintendo has so far focused on re-releasing titles from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy. Could the Switch 2 finally bring GameCube games to the forefront?

Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details remain under wraps, including other games and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, though the Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction.

Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted that Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. This suggests the console will use gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen locks. Unlike the original Switch, which used rails to attach Joy-Cons, the new controllers may use magnets, allowing them to be attached on either side. This flexibility could impact gameplay mechanics and player preferences for button and port placement.

Analysts predict the Switch 2 will be priced at $400, though some suggest it might reach up to $500. June has been floated as a possible release month. While much remains unknown, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2 to reveal more about the console.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered on the current Nintendo Switch.
