Garena Free City Pre-Registration Opens in SEA, Middle East, Africa
Garena Free City, the latest addition to the developer's extensive lineup, is now open for pre-registration on both iOS and Android platforms in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. If you've been eagerly awaiting the next installment in a renowned series, this game might just be the perfect interim solution.
Let's be straightforward: Garena Free City is essentially Garena's rendition of Grand Theft Auto, set to launch on June 30th. Whether this is a welcome addition or not hinges on personal taste. At first glance, it may appear as a lackluster mobile clone of GTA, but a closer look reveals some promising features.
For starters, the game boasts a robust character customization system, reminiscent of The Sims, allowing detailed manipulation of individual features. Unlike the more realistic style of GTA, Free City embraces a more fantastical approach, featuring elements like giant robots and summonable power-ups, such as deployable cover.
Bold & BrashHowever, it's clear that the game also heavily draws inspiration from the allure of Grand Theft Auto Online. This is somewhat disappointing, as the more unique elements of Free City are what truly capture attention.
Timing could be a challenge for Garena with Free City's release. While there might not be a definitive "killer app" in any single mobile genre, the upcoming game Ananta is positioning itself with a vast open world and quirky side quests, similar to Free City but with a more distinctive flair. Ananta's anime aesthetic might not appeal to everyone, yet it's this divergence from the norm that Free City seems to lack, which is my primary critique so far.
If you're keen on staying ahead of the curve with the latest game releases, don't miss Catherine's regular feature, "Ahead of the Game," where you can discover upcoming titles available to play right now.
