The Show is Not Cancelled

Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War adaptation. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.

Key figures remaining attached to the project include Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog (executive producer), PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo’s Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio’s Yumi Yang. Sony and Amazon will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.

Future Plans Despite Setbacks

The Amazon and Sony collaboration for the God of War TV series was first announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, following the success of the 2018 God of War game reboot. This initiative reflects Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television. This led to the creation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. The announcement also included a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among other projects.

Successful adaptations already released include Naughty Dog's Uncharted (2022) and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (2023), with a second season slated for 2025. Other releases include the Gran Turismo film (2023) and the Twisted Metal TV series (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film, set for release on April 25, 2025.
