How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley

When starting a new character in Stardew Valley, you have the chance to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm. Originally, you were limited to just one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that, allowing you to adopt more than one pet. To unlock this feature, you must first maximize your friendship level with your initial pet.

To do this, ensure you provide your pet with a full bowl of water daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when the bowl fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day by interacting with them; you'll know you've done it right when a heart bubble appears over their head. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of the pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notice from Marnie via mail, informing you of the opportunity to adopt additional pets available at her shop, located just south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley

After choosing your new pets, visit Robin’s carpentry shop in the northern area of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls for each. These bowls are crucial as they not only provide water but also serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting this can lead to your pets running away, costing you both companionship and money.

Pet Bowls are available under Robin’s "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, each costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (which you can obtain with a Copper Axe or better). It’s advisable to buy these before adopting new pets to ensure you don't lose any friendship points.

Marnie’s Ranch also offers optional pet supplies like Doghouses for outdoor pets and Cat Trees for indoor ones. These items are purely decorative and do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
