HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in their upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, confirming only that they will announce casting details as deals are finalized, Variety reports Lithgow is nearing a deal for the pivotal role. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as a top contender for the part.

"We understand the significant interest and speculation surrounding this project," an HBO spokesperson stated. "As we progress through pre-production, confirmations will only be made upon completion of contracts."

Lithgow's extensive acting credits include not only Shrek, but also notable performances in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown.

While casting remains largely undisclosed, reports suggest HBO is making headway. The search for the young leads—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—continues, alongside the already confirmed casting of Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This aligns with reports of J.K. Rowling's involvement in the casting process.

Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the books, promising a more nuanced and detailed narrative than the film adaptations allowed. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones veteran) are attached to direct and write.
