Helldivers 2 Movie: Developers Shouldn't Have Final Say

Apr 19,25

The tech-centric CES 2025 event brought unexpected announcements from Sony, including the confirmation of a movie adaptation for the popular PlayStation game, Helldivers 2. This project is a joint effort between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures, marking an exciting new venture for fans of the game.

During the CES event, Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming film, stating, "Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2." Developed by Arrowhead, Helldivers 2 draws heavy inspiration from the cult classic sci-fi satire Starship Troopers. The game follows future soldiers fighting to protect a fascist regime known as Super Earth from alien robots, called Automatons, and bugs, referred to as Terminids, all while promoting "Managed Democracy."

While fans are eager for more details about the Helldivers 2 movie, Sony and Arrowhead are keeping their cards close to the chest. Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead's CCO, responded to a question on X/Twitter about the developer's involvement in the film's production. Pilestedt admitted he had been avoiding the topic but confirmed that Arrowhead would have some input, though not creative control. He emphasized the importance of leaving the filmmaking to the experts, saying, "I've been dodging this question. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see. We are not Hollywood people, and we don't know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don't, and shouldn't, have final say."

Given that Starship Troopers already exists, Helldivers 2 might seem an unusual choice for a movie adaptation. It will be fascinating to see how Sony approaches this project and who they choose to bring it to life. At this early stage, concrete details are scarce, suggesting that it may be a while before more information emerges.

Helldivers 2 has become a phenomenal success, being the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. The game is currently experiencing a resurgence thanks to the long-awaited Illuminate update, which introduces a third faction for players to battle against.

Alongside the Helldivers 2 announcement, Sony's CES 2025 press conference also revealed plans for a movie adaptation of Guerrilla's Horizon Zero Dawn and an anime adaptation of Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima. This signifies Sony's strong commitment to adapting its video games into other media, with the second season of the acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us set to premiere in April.
