Heralds of Ice and Thunder: Synergy in Path of Exile 2
Quick Links
In Path of Exile 2, mastering the Double Herald setup can transform your gameplay, allowing Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice to synergize, triggering explosive chain reactions that can obliterate entire screens with a single strike. While it's not essential to fully grasp how these Herald skills interact, understanding their mechanics can significantly enhance your ability to craft innovative builds. Below, we delve into setting up this powerful technique and explain its inner workings.
How to Use Double Herald (Herald of Ice + Herald of Thunder) in PoE 2
To harness the power of the Double Herald setup, you'll need to prepare the following:
Herald of Ice Skill Gem, paired with the
Lightning Infusion Support Gem
Herald of Thunder Skill Gem, enhanced by the
Cold Infusion Support Gem (consider adding
Glaciation for optimal results).
- A minimum of 60 Spirit
- A reliable source of Cold damage.
Ensure both Herald skills are activated by right-clicking their icons in the skills menu.
To kickstart the chain reaction, you'll need to trigger Herald of Ice. The most effective method involves using inherent skills like the Monk's Ice Strike. Alternative approaches include:
- Utilizing passive skills to boost Freeze accumulation, paired with weapons or gloves that deal flat cold damage.
- Equipping the
Against the Darkness Time-Lost Diamond Jewel, which increases cold damage percentage.
How Do Herald Of Ice And Thunder Work Together in PoE 2
Herald of Ice activates upon Shattering an enemy, a phenomenon triggered when you strike a frozen foe, resulting in a widespread cold damage explosion. To prevent an uncontrolled chain reaction, Herald of Ice's cold damage is designed not to Freeze enemies, thus unable to cause Shatter on its own.
Conversely, Herald of Thunder activates when you slay a Shocked enemy, unleashing electric bolts that strike nearby foes. Similar to Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder cannot inflict Shock; it relies on external sources for this effect.
The synergy between these skills lies in their complementary effects: Herald of Ice can Shock but not Freeze, while Herald of Thunder can Freeze but not Shock. This interaction is facilitated by attaching the Lightning Infusion Support Gem to Herald of Ice, converting part of its damage to Lightning, capable of Shocking, and the Cold Infusion Support Gem to Herald of Thunder, converting part of its damage to Cold, capable of Freezing.
Under ideal conditions, this setup can theoretically perpetuate a chain reaction indefinitely. However, in practice, it typically sustains for one or two cycles before dissipating, requiring a steady influx of enemies to maintain. This is where Breaches shine, providing ample targets for the Double Herald setup to showcase its full potential.
To initiate the chain, you'll first need to trigger Herald of Ice by Freezing and then Shattering an enemy using a cold damage skill like the Monk's Ice Strike. This initial icy blast will also Shock nearby foes, setting off the chain reaction. Starting with Herald of Ice is strategic because Freezing enemies is easier than Shocking them, and Herald of Thunder's lightning bolts can reach distant targets more effectively than Herald of Ice's explosions.
