Hitman Franchise Surpasses Impressive Player Threshold

Jan 23,25

Hitman: World of Assassination achieves a remarkable milestone of over 75 million players. This impressive player count includes those who accessed the game through the free Starter Pack and the Xbox Game Pass (during its two-year availability). IO Interactive, the developer, considers this a monumental achievement, solidifying their current strong business position.

This success is notable considering World of Assassination isn't a single game, but a compilation of the latest Hitman trilogy. Launched in January 2023 for PC and consoles, and later on Meta Quest 3 in September 2024, the combined trilogy allowed players to purchase individual titles or the complete package. While specific sales figures for each game within the collection weren't released, Hitman 3's strong performance in certain markets likely contributed significantly to the overall player count.

The Impact of Xbox Game Pass and the Free Starter Pack

A major factor contributing to the 75 million player milestone is the game's two-year presence on Xbox Game Pass (ending January 2024), along with the ongoing availability of a free Starter Pack (introduced in 2021). Free demos for the first two trilogy entries also broadened the game's reach.

Hitman's Future: A Temporary Pause

While World of Assassination continues to receive regular content updates (including Elusive Targets), IO Interactive is currently focusing on other projects. These include the James Bond game, Project 007 (in development since 2020), and Project Fantasy, a new IP announced in 2023, which aims to explore a different genre for the studio. Therefore, a new Hitman title isn't currently in active development.
