What Should James Gunn's Second DCU Movie Be? We Have Ideas
James Gunn recently updated reporters on the DC Universe's status at a DC Studios presentation. He's currently scripting his next DCU film after Superman, keeping incredibly busy.
While Gunn hasn't revealed the project, speculation is rife. Considering his unique style, which franchises and characters are the best fit? Which films should be prioritized as Gunn and Peter Safran build this new shared universe? Here are some possibilities:

Batman: The Brave and the Bold
Despite Batman's cinematic prevalence, Batman: The Brave and the Bold generates significant interest. This reboot introduces the DCU's Caped Crusader, focusing on the Bat-family, including Damian Wayne. However, the film's progress seems slow, with director Andy Muschietti's involvement uncertain. Introducing a second cinematic Batman alongside Robert Pattinson's presents a challenge. The DCU needs a strong Batman, and if Muschietti departs, Gunn stepping in to ensure the project's success (a possibility already being discussed) would be beneficial. Gunn's expertise in portraying emotional father-son dynamics (seen in Guardians of the Galaxy) could make the Bruce/Damian relationship compelling.
The Flash
The Flash is crucial to any DC Universe, a Justice League cornerstone and multiverse figure. However, his live-action history is rocky. While The CW series showcased an ensemble approach, Ezra Miller's DCEU portrayal faltered, resulting in a box office failure. The Flash needs a fresh start, avoiding clichés like Flashpoint and focusing on Barry Allen (and/or Wally West), rather than overshadowing Batman. Gunn's knack for dynamic action and character development could revitalize the character.
The Authority
Gunn acknowledged difficulties in finding the right approach for The Authority, avoiding overlap with The Boys and similar projects. He stated it's currently on the back burner due to story complexities and existing character arcs. Still, The Authority is likely pivotal to the DCU's expansion, given its initial announcement and María Gabriela de Faría's Engineer appearing in Superman. The clash between optimistic heroes (like Superman) and the cynicism of The Authority is a key theme. Gunn's experience with misfit heroes and team dynamics makes him a suitable director.
Amanda Waller/ARGUS Movie
Gunn mentioned setbacks for the Waller series. This isn't surprising, given his commitments to Superman, Peacemaker: Season 2, and Creature Commandos. As his schedule allows, prioritizing Waller, possibly as a feature film rather than a series, might be beneficial. Waller and ARGUS are the DCU's connective tissue, appearing in Superman and Peacemaker. Focusing on this aspect makes sense.
Batman & Superman: World's Finest
Batman v Superman underperformed despite its potential. Audiences desired a more collaborative dynamic between the two heroes. Gunn could excel at crafting a film showcasing their friendship and teamwork against larger threats. Instead of solely focusing on The Brave and the Bold, a Gunn-directed Batman/Superman team-up could be a significant DCU success.
Titans
The Teen Titans have a large fanbase and rich history. While Max's Titans series had flaws, it demonstrated their live-action potential. A Titans movie is appealing, showcasing their dysfunctional family dynamic. Gunn's success with the Guardians suggests he could create a compelling Titans film.
Justice League Dark
The DCU's "Gods and Monsters" phase, featuring Swamp Thing and Creature Commandos, indicates a focus on the supernatural. Justice League Dark, featuring Zatanna, Etrigan, Deadman, Swamp Thing, and Constantine, could showcase this aspect. The team's inherent dysfunction fits Gunn's style. Including a character like Batman or Wonder Woman could broaden appeal.
