Disney movie veteran Jon Favreau is teaming up with Disney to bring the classic animated icon, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, to life in a new Disney+ series. According to a Deadline report, Favreau will combine his expertise in live-action and animation to create a unique TV show, serving as both writer and producer. While plot and casting details remain under wraps, this project marks an exciting revival for the beloved character.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, originally conceived by Walt Disney, first appeared in 26 silent cartoons between 1927 and 1928. However, due to a rights dispute, Universal gained control of the character, leading to a brief stint with Disney. This pivotal moment in Disney history is explored in our in-depth look at Disney’s 100-year history, which also highlights how Oswald's departure spurred the creation of Mickey Mouse. Disney regained the rights to Oswald in 2006 and released its first new original short starring the character in 95 years in 2022. Now, with Favreau's project, Disney aims to showcase Oswald as more than just a historical figure, though a release date for the series has yet to be announced.

PlayWhile Favreau is set to breathe new life into one of Disney's oldest characters, he has also been deeply involved in some of its newest franchises. Star Wars enthusiasts will recognize his significant contributions to the franchise with projects like The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. Additionally, Favreau has left his mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past 15 years, both behind and in front of the camera, and directed the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can look forward to seeing him direct again with The Mandalorian and Grogu, set to premiere in theaters in 2026.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit's resurgence under the Disney banner follows closely on the heels of his most recent cinematic appearance. In 2023, shortly after Oswald entered the public domain, Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole was introduced as a horror movie featuring the character, with Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson in the lead role.
