"Jurassic World's Rebirth Trailer Fails to Deliver on Franchise Promises"

May 30,25

If you're a fan of the Jurassic World saga, then you've probably already buzzed with excitement upon hearing about the release of the first trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth. As the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park franchise and the inaugural chapter of a "new era," this movie marks a fresh start following the conclusion of the Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard-led trilogy, Jurassic World Dominion. Directed by Gareth Edwards, this latest entry introduces an entirely new ensemble featuring the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali. Despite the impressive lineup and the return of original screenwriter David Koepp, the film’s premise showcased in the trailer feels somewhat regressive.

Whereas Fallen Kingdom and Dominion teased an expansive world where dinosaurs roamed freely across the globe, Rebirth seems to retreat into a more traditional setting, which feels like a missed opportunity for a series that has always prided itself on innovation.

Back to the Cretaceous

The Jurassic World trilogy has had its fair share of mixed reviews, but its financial success is undeniable, making it one of the most lucrative franchises of the past decade. Audiences worldwide adore dinosaurs, and with Universal moving forward with a new cast and crew, it was clear that more dino-driven blockbusters were inevitable. Edwards, known for his work on Godzilla and Rogue One, brings a unique flair to the table, particularly in his ability to craft visually stunning scenes with jaw-dropping special effects. His appointment was a bold move, given his expertise in CGI-heavy projects, which sets him apart from the typical indie directors often chosen for such endeavors.

Despite the trailer’s impressive visuals and Edwards’ knack for detail, there’s an elephant in the room: the lack of commitment to the "world of dinosaurs" concept teased since Fallen Kingdom. This feels like a step backward for a series that has always strived to push boundaries.

An Island? Again?!

In a twist that may surprise fans, Rebirth appears to return to the familiar setting of a tropical island filled with dinosaurs—a throwback to the franchise’s roots. While the island isn’t explicitly named as Isla Nublar or Isla Sorna, it’s described as the original Jurassic Park’s research facility. This decision raises eyebrows, especially considering the global spread of dinosaurs depicted in Dominion. The official synopsis suggests that Earth’s ecosystems are inhospitable to dinosaurs, confining them to isolated equatorial climates similar to their natural habitats.

This retreat to a tropical island feels redundant, especially after the efforts in Fallen Kingdom and Dominion to expand the universe beyond such confines. Why go back to the same formula when the previous trilogy hinted at a future where dinosaurs coexisted with humans? It’s perplexing to see the franchise abandon the very elements that made Dominion so memorable, particularly the urban chase sequence in Malta.

A Missed Opportunity

The Jurassic franchise has always been a safe bet for Hollywood, but that shouldn’t stop it from taking risks. Fans are eager to see something fresh, something that ventures into uncharted territory. Instead of recycling old tropes, why not explore new environments, themes, or narratives? The possibilities are endless, and the franchise’s loyal fanbase would undoubtedly embrace innovation.

While it’s possible that Rebirth has more surprises in store, the current trailer feels like a cautious step backward. The franchise has the potential to evolve and captivate audiences in ways no one else can, but it needs to embrace change rather than clinging to the past.
