Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enters Media Silence
Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced that it is now fully focused on its next game, implementing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. This decision comes despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, expected later this year, which will bring further enhancements to the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.
Swen Vincke, the head of Larian, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to reflect on the studio’s journey with Baldur’s Gate 3, which has seen immense success both critically and commercially. Vincke hinted at future endeavors, saying, “But the story ain't over yet,” suggesting more exciting projects on the horizon.
Got me all nostalgic - it really has been an incredible journey so far. But the story ain't over yet. Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don't mind. https://t.co/eLSTv3CXb4

In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian confirmed that Swen and the team's full attention is now devoted to crafting their next title, emphasizing their shift to a media blackout to maintain focus and secrecy around the new project. It’s clear that Larian’s next game won’t be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3, nor will it be related to Dungeons & Dragons. Instead, it’s a brand new venture, as Larian had previously struggled to generate internal enthusiasm for another Baldur's Gate installment.
Hints about the studio’s next big game were dropped by Vincke in November 2023, where he expressed excitement about pushing boundaries with their upcoming project, spurred on by the success and accolades of Baldur’s Gate 3 at The Game Awards. In July 2023, Vincke also mentioned to IGN that a sequel to Larian’s Divinity: Original Sin series is on the cards, though it’s not the immediate focus.
With Divinity not being the next project, speculation abounds about what Larian might be working on. Could it be a new game set in a different universe, perhaps venturing into science fiction or a modern-day setting? Or might they explore a new genre altogether? Given Larian's history with fantasy RPGs, this new direction is highly anticipated.
While fans eagerly await more details, it seems we may have to wait years before getting a clear picture of what Larian has in store. The media blackout signals a period of intense development and creative exploration for the studio, promising something truly innovative and boundary-pushing.
