The trailer showcased numerous characters, most appearing as expected. However, Donkey Kong's noticeably different design stood out. His appearance has remained consistent for years, across titles like Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. The stylistic changes introduced in The Super Mario Bros. Movie now seem to be influencing his in-game portrayal.

Although the Mario Kart 9 trailer offered only fleeting glimpses of Donkey Kong, the differences are already apparent. A more detailed comparison will likely emerge after the April Nintendo Direct, which is anticipated to showcase the Nintendo Switch 2 more extensively. The console reveal trailer hinted at backwards compatibility, new Joy-Con buttons, and the potential use of the controller as a mouse.
