Microsoft Reveals and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Games Tab

Apr 09,25

Microsoft has inadvertently revealed an upcoming Xbox UI update that showcases a feature allowing players to view all PC games installed via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and other platforms. This glimpse into the future was exposed in a blog post titled "Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox," which was quickly altered after eagle-eyed observers noticed a "Steam" tab in an accompanying image.

Although the image was removed shortly after, the initial inclusion of Steam in an Xbox UI mockup suggests a significant shift in Microsoft's approach to gaming ecosystems. The Verge reported that Microsoft is in the early stages of developing an update that would not only integrate Steam but also other PC storefronts, enabling players to see their entire PC game library alongside their Xbox titles.

This move underscores Microsoft's ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between Xbox and PC gaming. Over the past decade, the company has increasingly released its titles on multiple platforms, including Pentiment and Grounded on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Rumors also suggest that the Master Chief Collection might soon be available on PlayStation.

Microsoft's "This is an Xbox" campaign further illustrates this trend, highlighting the various devices on which players can enjoy Xbox games. In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible directly through Xbox hardware.

Looking ahead, reports indicate that Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, expected in 2027, will be more akin to a PC than any previous Xbox console, signaling a continued evolution in the company's gaming strategy.
