Minecraft 2 “Basically Announced” By Original Creator

Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hinted at a potential Minecraft 2 in early 2025. This follows a poll on X (formerly Twitter) where he gauged interest in developing either a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid or a spiritual successor to his iconic creation.

A Spiritual Successor in the Works?

Persson's X poll revealed a strong preference (81.5% of 287k votes) for a Minecraft-inspired game. He subsequently confirmed he's "100% serious" and essentially announced a Minecraft 2, acknowledging the overwhelming fan demand. He clarified that while he's open to developing either project, the popularity of the Minecraft 2 option is a significant factor.

It's important to note that Persson sold Mojang (Minecraft's developer) and the IP to Microsoft in 2014. This means he can't directly use the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assures fans that any spiritual successor would avoid infringing on Mojang's current work, expressing respect for their continued development and Microsoft's stewardship.

Persson also voiced concerns about the challenges inherent in creating spiritual successors, acknowledging the risk of falling short of expectations. Despite these concerns, the potential for a new game, and the strong fan support, has motivated him to pursue the project.

While fans eagerly await this potential "sequel," they can look forward to other Minecraft experiences, including themed amusement parks slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action movie, "A Minecraft Movie," releasing later in 2025.
