Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action

The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise for action game fans: the reveal of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the remastered Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This announcement marks a significant milestone for Team Ninja, celebrating their 30th anniversary and declaring 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."

Team Ninja, in collaboration with PlatinumGames, is bringing the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4 to life. Thirteen years after Ninja Gaiden 3, this direct sequel promises the same brutally challenging yet rewarding gameplay the series is known for. The partnership with Xbox is a natural progression, given their history of collaborating on titles like the Dead or Alive franchise and the original Xbox 360 release of Ninja Gaiden 2.

A New Ninja Takes Center Stage

Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan, aiming to achieve Master Ninja status. PlatinumGames' Art Director, Tomoko Nishii, describes Yakumo's design as a figure who can stand alongside the legendary Ryu Hayabusa. However, fans need not worry; Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the story, serving as a formidable challenge and mentor for Yakumo.

Yuji Nakao, Producer and Director from PlatinumGames, explains the decision behind the new protagonist: "Since it’s been a while since the last game, we wanted a new hero to make the series more approachable for new players. Of course, we also wanted long-time fans to enjoy the game, so Ryu Hayabusa plays a significant role in the story." Ryu Hayabusa will be playable, ensuring veteran fans still get their fix of high-octane Hayabusa action.

Revamped Combat and a New Style

Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature fast-paced, brutal combat. Yakumo's introduction brings a new fighting style: the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style, alongside his Raven Style. Team Ninja's Director, Masazaku Hirayama, assures fans that both styles maintain the core feel of the Ninja Gaiden series, while PlatinumGames' influence adds a layer of speed and dynamism.

The game is nearing completion, with the team currently focused on polishing. More details are expected soon, and Team Ninja is eager for players to experience the game firsthand.

Release Date and Availability

Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic

In addition to the new installment, a remake of Ninja Gaiden 2, titled Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, also included with Xbox Game Pass. This version features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, offering a fresh take on a classic for both veterans and newcomers.
